During the winter months, the coastal waters around Finland, Sweden and Estonia are covered with ice. Alfons Håkans’ tugs are contracted by the harbour authorities in various ports to keep the berths clear from ice when ships enter or leave the ports.

Furthermore, Alfons Håkans maintains contracts with the Finnish government to provide icebreaking services, thereby ensuring safe winter navigation for merchant shipping in Finnish waters.

Alfons Håkans is also active in towing vessels which have been disabled in the ice. The entire fleet of Alfons Håkans tugs are specially designed for icebreaking operations.
